Series Overview

Two Decisions Set the Performance

High-temperature tape is specified by two variables, and the second one is usually the one that fails. The backing sets the ceiling: polyimide and polyester films hold their dimensions, dielectric strength and mask-edge registration through the heat cycle; crepe masking paper conforms around curves and tears by hand; glass cloth carries mechanical strength and abrasion resistance; PTFE releases and resists chemicals. The adhesive system then decides how hot the finished tape can actually run and how it comes off.

Silicone adhesive is the standard choice for high-temperature work — stable to roughly 260 °C continuously and to 300 °C in short process peaks, releasing cleanly afterwards. Acrylic adhesive gives higher initial tack and better contact with non-silicone processes, but it degrades above about 175 °C, so it belongs in powder-coating and lower-temperature masking rather than in reflow. Production runs in-house at Songyang's Dongguan, China plant — compounding, coating, converting, slitting and QC across 16 production lines — so international buyers source high-temperature tape factory-direct instead of through a trading layer.

Tape Types in Detail

Which Backing for Which Job

Six constructions cover the range. The notes below set out what each backing does, where its temperature limit comes from, and the processes it is normally bought for.

Polyimide (PI) high-temperature tape in amber film with silicone adhesive, supplied on roll by Songyang New Material

Polyimide (PI) Tape

Amber polyimide film with a silicone adhesive system — the highest-temperature masking tape in the range, and the grade electronics buyers specify most often. On a PCB it is applied over gold fingers and edge connectors before wave or reflow soldering, holding the mask edge accurately through the solder cycle and releasing without leaving adhesive on the contacts. Outside electronics it is used for splicing on high-temperature production lines and for thin-wall insulation inside motors, transformers and battery assemblies.

  • Backing — polyimide (PI) film, Kapton-type
  • Adhesive — silicone
  • Temperature — 260–300 °C (500–572 °F) intermittent
  • Grades — standard insulating, or ESD / antistatic with surface resistance 10⁶–10⁹ Ω
  • Thickness — 1–2 mil (25–50 µm)
Polyester (PET) green high-temperature tape for powder coating and spray masking, supplied by Songyang New Material

Polyester (PET) Green Tape

A polyester film backing with silicone adhesive, supplied in the green that makes masked areas easy to see on the line. It covers powder coating, spray painting, anodizing and bake cycles up to about 220 °C, where the tape has to hold a sharp edge on a flat or gently curved panel and then pull away without lifting the coating. Polyester keeps its dimensions through the cure, so mask lines stay registered and paint does not creep under the edge.

  • Backing — polyester (PET) film
  • Adhesive — silicone
  • Temperature — 180–220 °C (356–428 °F)
  • Properties — dimensional stability, sharp mask line, clean removal
  • Typical use — powder coating, spray and bake masking, anodizing
High-temperature crepe masking paper tape for curved and irregular spray and bake masking, supplied by Songyang New Material

High-Temperature Masking Paper Tape

Crepe paper backing with a heat-resistant adhesive — the grade for the parts a film tape cannot follow. Paper conforms around bends, radii and irregular profiles, takes a fine mask line by hand and tears without a dispenser, which is why it stays the everyday consumable of paint and coating shops. It is supplied across a range of temperature grades so the paper is matched to the cure cycle rather than the other way round.

  • Backing — crepe masking paper
  • Adhesive — heat-resistant
  • Temperature — 120–180 °C (248–356 °F), grades to suit the cure cycle
  • Properties — conforms to curves, tears by hand, fine mask line
  • Typical use — spray painting and bake masking on curved or irregular parts
  • Grades — 120, 150 and 180 °C (248, 302 and 356 °F) cure cycles
Glass cloth (fiberglass) high-temperature tape for coil and transformer insulation, supplied by Songyang New Material

Glass Cloth Tape

Woven glass fiber cloth with a silicone adhesive. The backing is what separates this grade from the films: glass cloth resists tearing and abrasion, takes mechanical stress under tension, and holds its dielectric performance at temperatures that would destroy a polymer film. That is why it is used for winding insulation on motors, transformers and generators, and for bundling harnesses and pipework that run hot.

  • Backing — woven glass fiber (fiberglass) cloth
  • Adhesive — silicone
  • Temperature — 200–280 °C (392–536 °F) depending on grade
  • Properties — high tensile strength, tear and abrasion resistance, electrical insulation
  • Typical use — motor, transformer and coil winding insulation, harness bundling
PTFE high-temperature tape for heat sealing and release applications, supplied by Songyang New Material

PTFE Tape

Two constructions sit under this heading. The PTFE-coated glass fabric tape is the form used on heat-sealing bars, packaging jaws and conveyor runs, where the tape has to release sticky product continuously; the PTFE film tape covers thinner release duties and chemical resistance. Both give a low-friction, non-stick surface that resists the solvents, resins and release agents which attack ordinary tape.

  • Constructions — PTFE-coated glass fabric tape; PTFE film tape
  • Adhesive — silicone
  • Temperature — 200–260 °C (392–500 °F)
  • Properties — non-stick release, low friction, chemical resistance
  • Typical use — heat sealing, packaging jaws, conveyor wrapping, mold release

High-Temperature Double-Coated Tape

Where the job is holding two surfaces together rather than masking one, double-coated tape carries a heat-resistant adhesive on both faces. The backing decides how hot the joint can run: tissue for low-temperature fixing and easy die-cutting, polyester where dimensional stability matters, polyimide for bonding next to a soldering process, and glass cloth where the bond has to survive mechanical load as well as heat.

  • Constructions — tissue, polyester (PET), polyimide (PI) or glass cloth backing
  • Adhesive — silicone or acrylic, on both faces
  • Temperature — 80–300 °C (176–572 °F) depending on backing
  • Typical use — component fixing, foam and sponge bonding, high-temperature lamination
BackingContinuousShort termProperties

Featured Grade

PI (Polyimide) High-Temperature Tape

Amber polyimide film tape with silicone adhesive — the grade behind reflow soldering, production-line splicing and the masking of gold fingers and edge connectors on PCBs. Overseas buyers also search for this product as Kapton-type tape.

Polyimide high-temperature tape in amber PI film with silicone adhesive, supplied in multiple roll widths by Songyang New Material

Where PI tape is used

Masking gold fingers and edge connectors on PCBs before wave and reflow soldering, heat-resistant splicing on production lines, and thin-wall electrical insulation inside electronic assemblies. The silicone adhesive releases cleanly after the thermal cycle, so the masked area does not need rework.

Gold finger maskingReflowSplicingInsulation

In the Chinese market this grade is also sold as gold finger tape — the name comes from the PCB gold fingers it masks. Songyang quotes it as polyimide (PI) tape.

Two grades — standard insulating and antistatic

Standard insulating grade

Electrical insulation for general masking, splicing and shielding duties, with the dielectric behaviour expected of a polyimide film backing.

Antistatic grade

Surface resistance 10⁶–10⁹ Ω for ESD-sensitive assembly areas. Confirm the static-control requirement with Songyang's sales team so the correct grade is quoted.

FAQ

Common Questions

Who is Songyang and where is your high-temperature tape factory?
Dongguan Songyang New Material Technology Co., Ltd. is a China-based manufacturer of specialty adhesive tapes and protective films, based in Houjie, Dongguan, Guangdong. Songyang has worked in the industry since 1998 — 28 years — and operates a 9,000+ m² facility with 16 production lines, 5,000+ product specifications and 5,600+ customers served. Songyang produces polyimide (PI), polyester (PET), crepe masking paper, glass cloth and PTFE high-temperature tapes at this Dongguan plant and supplies electronics, powder-coating and industrial buyers worldwide.
What temperature can your high-temperature tape withstand?
Songyang's high-temperature tape range covers 130 °C to about 300 °C by type. Crepe masking paper sits at the lower end at 120–180 °C (248–356 °F); polyester (PET) green tape covers powder-coating and spray masking at 180–220 °C (356–428 °F); glass cloth tape reaches 200–280 °C (392–536 °F) depending on grade; PTFE tape runs 200–260 °C (392–500 °F); and polyimide (PI) tape handles 260–300 °C (500–572 °F) intermittent for reflow, wave soldering and splicing. Exact limits are confirmed against the grade you are quoted.
What is the difference between polyimide tape, Kapton tape and gold finger tape?
Kapton is a DuPont registered trademark for a polyimide film; polyimide tape is the generic product name for tape made with a polyimide backing. Gold finger tape is the name this grade is sold under in the Chinese market, taken from the PCB gold fingers it masks. Songyang supplies polyimide (PI) tape built on Kapton-type film — the same amber polyimide construction and silicone adhesive system, without the brand premium attached to the trademarked name. Send the temperature cycle and the application and Songyang's sales team will confirm the grade that meets it.
Should I choose a silicone or an acrylic adhesive?
Silicone is the standard adhesive for high-temperature tape at Songyang: it stays stable to about 260 °C continuously and to 300 °C in short process peaks, and releases cleanly afterwards. Acrylic adhesive gives higher initial tack and better contact with non-silicone processes, but it degrades above roughly 175 °C, so it suits powder-coating and lower-temperature masking rather than reflow soldering. Tell Songyang's sales team your peak temperature, dwell time and removal requirement and the adhesive system is matched to the process.
Which tape should I use for powder coating?
For powder coating and spray masking, Songyang recommends polyester (PET) green high-temperature tape for flat and gently curved panels, or its high-temperature crepe masking paper where the part is curved or irregular. Send Songyang's sales team your cure temperature and bake cycle so the right grade is confirmed.
Do you supply PTFE and glass cloth tape?
Yes — Songyang supplies PTFE tape in two constructions, a PTFE-coated glass fabric tape for heat sealing and conveyor wrapping and a PTFE film tape for thinner release duties, plus woven glass cloth tape for coil, motor and transformer insulation. Both are produced and slit at Songyang's Dongguan plant and are supplied to packaging, electronics and industrial buyers worldwide.
Can I customize width, color, printing and packaging?
Yes — Songyang slits high-temperature tape from 3 mm to 1,300 mm wide (subject to product model) and supports custom colors, printed text, private-label cores, labels, cartons and die-cut shapes.
What are the sample and production lead times?
Samples typically take 5–30 days depending on the specification — consult Songyang's sales team for the exact schedule on your model. Bulk production then runs on 16 lines at Songyang's Dongguan plant, with the timeline confirmed in your quotation.
Do you supply ESD polyimide tape for ESD-sensitive assembly?
Yes. Songyang supplies polyimide (PI) high-temperature tape in two grades from its Dongguan plant — a standard insulating grade, and an ESD / antistatic grade with surface resistance of 10⁶–10⁹ Ω for ESD-sensitive assembly areas. Confirm the static-control requirement and slit width with Songyang's sales team so the correct grade is quoted.
How do I get a quotation, and what information should I send?
